Virtual Disk¶

VHDX¶

Version 7.2.0 introduces initial support for VHDX disk images, the native virtual disk format supported by Microsoft Hyper-V.

Supported¶

The current implementation supports

• Dynamic-size disk
• Both 512-byte and 4096-byte logical sectors
• Partitioning
  • Unpartitioned images
  • GPT partitioned images. The first partition is used, after skipping EFI System and Microsoft Reserved partitions.
• Encryption: none (coming soon of course, for VHDX support to make any sense)
• All supported filesystems

Limitations¶

These features are not yet supported. Most of these will be worked on during the 7.2.x update series.

• Fixed-size disk
• Write support
• MBR partition table
• Encryption using supported formats (e.g. VeraCrypt encrypted disk/partition)
• Bitlocker-encryption
• Differencing disk (images that depend on a parent image)
• VHDX log recovery (pending VHDX log changes must be resolved before the image can be opened)
• VHD disk image format. This is a predecessor of VHDX. This will not be implemented, unless there is a good use-case.
